Do Not Mention AI

You'll notice there's no AI disclaimer on this note.

I often use AI as a compilation tool. I have sometimes multi-hour chats with Claude, and at the end of those chats I have Claude compile a note—which I edit—and sometimes share it online with a disclaimer that it was compiled with AI. I mentioned this workflow in a chat server as a response to someone talking about how they use AI. Someone else replied to me with three paragraphs about the danger of AI. I don't often send any messages on this chat server, and after sending a message for the first time in six months, that was my first experience. I remembered why I don't look at that chat server often.

The first thing we should do as Stoics when talking with others is remember we have imperfect knowledge. I think I made myself clear about how I use AI: I throw thoughts at it and ask it to compile my two hours of musing into a coherent note. I guess that's not a valid use case for some people. Maybe they didn't care what I said. I mentioned AI, and that's enough to draw some people's ire.

I'm a software developer and quite familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of LLMs. I'm not afraid of them. AI is a tool. It's how you use it that matters.
